The outsize date of an A. Lange & Söhne watch, close up

A. Lange & Söhne

Women – don't be afraid of wearing a man's size watch! It depends on your wrist, but see the men's section for other options. These are mostly smaller watches made specifically for women.

Lange made the Little Lange 1 in 1998 because its retailers in Asia asked for a smaller Lange 1, and it began as a men’s watch. Lange shrank the case to 36.8mm and kept the same movement inside, down to the hand-engraved balance cock. In 2018 it gave the women’s versions guilloché gold dials in purple, gray, and brown. Lange changes the size and the dial, and it leaves the watchmaking alone.

I can source any watch, new or used, even very hard-to-get. I chose these examples to guide you.

Phillips calls the Soirée, launched in 2001, the dressiest version of the Lange 1. The face is made from a thin layer of mother-of-pearl. Lange put all this engineering, including the big date window, into a 38.5mm case just for the most discerning woman who is willing to wind her watch with pleasure every day.

More about A. Lange & Söhne

Ferdinand Adolph Lange opened a workshop in Glashütte, in Saxony, in 1845 and founded the town's watch industry. After the Second World War, the Soviet occupation authorities expropriated the company in 1948, and the name disappeared for four decades.

Walter Lange, the founder's great-grandson, revived the firm in 1990. The first new collection came out in 1994, led by the Lange 1 with its oversized date. The Lange factory is one of the most advanced in the world. Richemont has owned Lange since 2000.
