Antoni Patek and François Czapek founded the company in Geneva in 1839, and Adrien Philippe, who invented winding a watch by its crown, joined in 1845. In 1868 Patek made what it calls the first Swiss wristwatch. The Stern family has owned the company since 1932. Patek built the Henry Graves Supercomplication in 1933 and the Calibre 89 in 1989, and Gérald Genta designed its Nautilus in 1976.

The firm took the name Patek Philippe in 1851, and the wristwatch of 1868 went to a Hungarian countess. The Sterns, who bought the company in 1932, had made its dials. Patek built the Henry Graves Supercomplication for an American banker, and the Calibre 89 marked its 150th anniversary with 33 complications.
