The black dial of a Panerai Luminor Marina 8 Days, close up

Panerai

Giovanni Panerai opened a watch shop in Florence in 1860, and the company went on to make instruments and watches for the Royal Italian Navy’s frogmen. In 1949 it patented Luminor, a luminous paint that replaced radium. Panerai Luminor watches are much brighter in the dark than any other watch I’ve ever seen. Panerai sold only to the military until 1993.

I can source any watch, new or used, even very hard-to-get. I chose these examples to guide you.

Luminor Due

About $22,000 at launch in 2023

Panerai made the Luminor Due as a slimmer, lighter version of the Luminor, and with this 2023 model it brought yellow gold into the line. Panerai paired the gold with a green sun-brushed dial and a green alligator strap and offered it only in its own boutiques.

Luminor 1950 8 Days Chrono Monopulsante GMT Pink Gold

From about $19,000

A single pusher at 8 o'clock works the chronograph, and the scale at 6 shows how much of the eight days of power remains. A second hour hand follows another time zone. Panerai made 250 of these in pink gold in 2007.

Luminor · 47mm · Manual wind · PAM01784Tap to see the back

Luminor Tourbillon GMT Titanio

About $173,000 at launch in 2026

Panerai cut away most of the blue-finished movement, so you can see its gears and the tourbillon at 10 o'clock. Because the case is titanium, the watch weighs about 105 grams, and a full wind lasts six days.

Luminor Submersible Slytech and Luminor Daylight Slytech, group

Luminor Submersible Slytech and Luminor Daylight Slytech

About $32,000 to $40,000 pre-owned in 2026

Sylvester Stallone wore Panerai in the 1996 film Daylight, and around that time the company made these Slytech editions for him. The black Submersible and the white Daylight both show the Slytech name on the dial. Panerai made about 100 of each.

Submersible QuarantaQuattro

About $10,000 new in 2025

QuarantaQuattro is Italian for 44, the case width in millimeters. Panerai added that size to the Submersible line in 2022, between its 42mm and 47mm models, and on this version it pairs a white dial with a military-green rubber strap.

Submersible Forze Speciali Experience

About $59,000 at launch in 2022

Each of the 50 buyers of this chronograph got an invitation to Italy to join the Italian Navy's special forces in a series of exercises. Panerai signed the dial Marina Militare and fitted a camouflage rubber strap.

L'Astronomo Luminor 1950 Tourbillon Moon Phases Equation of Time GMT

About $215,000 at launch in 2018

Panerai builds each L'Astronomo to order and sets the sunrise and sunset times for a city the owner chooses. The dial also shows the moon phase, and a scale at 6 shows how far a sundial would differ from the watch that day.

More about Panerai

In 1916 the company patented Radiomir, a luminous paint made with radium. Luminor replaced it with tritium, and Panerai later gave the name to the watch with a lever that locks the crown. The Vendôme group, now Richemont, bought Panerai in 1997.
