The openworked dial of an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, close up

Audemars Piguet

Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded the company in 1875 in Le Brassus, in Switzerland's Vallée de Joux. Their descendants still own it, so it remains one of the few large Swiss makers in family hands.

I can source any watch, new or used, even very hard-to-get. I chose these examples to guide you.

Note how minimal the pushers are at 2 and 4 - you can barely see them. Pressing them takes less force than on a typical chronograph, AP says, and the hands return to zero in less than 0.15 seconds. AP made 150 for its 150th anniversary. The RD#5 is the fifth and last of AP's research watches.

This movement has two balance wheels, the parts that swing back and forth to keep time, on one shared axis, which AP says makes the watch more precise. AP introduced the design in 2016, and in 2024 it paired a steel case with a pink-gold-toned movement.

Every quarter hour this watch chimes the hours and quarters on its own, and it repeats the time to the minute when you press a button. Three gongs sound the quarters instead of the usual two, and AP says its patented Supersonnerie design makes the chime louder. AP made the case from sand gold, with a band of black ceramic around its middle.

For this flying tourbillon, AP made the case, bezel, and bracelet in a dark-blue ceramic it calls Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50. Nothing holds the tourbillon at 6 o'clock from above, so nothing blocks your view of it.

More about Audemars Piguet

In 1892 it made the movement for the first minute-repeater wristwatch. Its Royal Oak, Gérald Genta's octagonal steel sports watch, went on sale in 1972 and remains the company's best-known model. In 1986 it made the first self-winding tourbillon wristwatch, which was also the thinnest tourbillon wristwatch at the time. Audemars Piguet also owns a minority stake in Richard Mille.
